what is blown-In Fiberglass?
Blown-in insulation is unbonded fiberglass material that is manufactured in a similar process to fiberglass batt insulation. It is designed to be machine applied by mixing the material with air and blowing it into open attic application. Fiberglass blown-in insulation can also be applied in wall cavities using netting, known as a Blow-In Blanket System (BIBS).
When Should My Attic Insulation Be Replaced?
Depending on the insulation material used, fiberglass insulation has an average lifespan of efficiency is 15-20 years at best before needing to be “upgraded”.
The best way to know if your home’s insulation needs replacement is to call an expert for an insulation inspection. The following telltale signs point to insulation issues that will need professional attention:
- Unusually high energy bills
- Unpleasant odors
- Water damage
- Condensation on interior walls and floors
- Household pests
- Heating and cooling issues
- Indoor drafts
- Frozen pipes
- Worsening allergy symptoms
If you suspect there is an issue with your existing insulation, reach out to (361) 334-0440. Our insulation experts can schedule a free insulation consultation to determine the source of your energy or comfort issues.
Before and After - Old Insulation Removal
If your attic looks like the before picture…it’s time for new insulation.
During high summer temperatures, running your home’s A/C under 72° F can cause condensation in the home and possibly mold within your walls and floors. Inspecting your attic and adding the appropriate amount of blown-in fiberglass insulation (min. 14″ required for South TX households) you could save more money and avoid the expensive price of tackling mold damage in your home.
FAQ
All your insulation questions answered
Blown-in insulation fills in gaps better and has a higher R-value. The more inches of insulation you add, the better it insulates versus the same thickness of batts or rolls.
The US Department of Energy recommends anywhere from 10 to 14 inches of attic insulation or around R-38 for South Texas attics.
Most residential projects take less than half a day to install, depending on the size of the home. Larger projects may take two days, while commercial buildings may need up to a week.
When installing blown-in fiberglass insulation, the insulation materials and attic markers are provided for the customer to see the depth of insulation. Baffles and removal of old insulation are additional costs.
Blowing insulation into your home takes some special machinery, but it is a simple process similar to vacuuming only in reverse.
- A large machine sits in the back of our box trucks, similar to a moving truck, allowing installers to feed insulation into the top of the machine.
- Installers unwrap packages of insulation before dropping them one at a time into the open-ended top of the machine.
- Slow-moving blades at the bottom of the machine turn the insulation to loosen it.
- Another set of blades, smaller than the first set, turn in a 90-degree direction from the larger ones. These blades feed into the tube.
- A powerful blower then moves the small clumps of blow-in insulation towards your home or business through a very long series of hoses.
Because the blowing machine is large and heavy, professional installers keep the machine in their truck for ease of use. The team might use ladders to access the attic, while several hose lengths make it easy to distribute the insulation.
